The Gentle Modern School of Dog Training

Welcome to The Gentle Modern School of Dog Training.
Click here for our school on the Bellarine Peninsula
Our aim is to help you to have fun and success when training your dog using The Gentle Modern Method of Dog Training™.
The school was started in the early 1970's by the late David Weston - pioneer of training using positive reinforcement in Australia. It is now run by his wife, Ruth.
Katarina Behan administers the school in Melbourne. Ruth has opened a school on the Bellarine Peninsula in 2008. Senior instructors are Ruth Weston, Katarina Behan, Dietmar Grzegorek, Amanda Jenkins, Sue Hooper, Julie Pierce, Sue Keane and Chris Foster. We are all experienced dog training instructors who are members of The Australian Association of Gentle Modern Dog Training Instructors Inc. The school is a registered animal business under State Government legislation.
What we offer:
- Individual training for handlers of puppies and adult dogs
- Advice about house training, jumping up, mouthing etc
- Assistance with behaviour problems
- Help with creating an excellent relationship between you and your dog
- Assisting you to meet the criteria for entry to The Kintala Club Inc.
How we run the school:
Your first lesson will be held at the Kintala clubrooms in Plymoth Street Heidelberg which is secure and free of distractions
We offer a course of 3 lessons with additional lessons available if required .
Fees: We try to keep costs down to a very reasonable level - the fee is $130.00 for three 45 minute lessons. We respectfully ask that you give at least 48 hours notice if you need to change your appointment time so that we can continue to keep fees at a level which handlers can afford.
If you wish to meet the criteria to go on into The Kintala Club with a dog that is too old for the club's puppy training course - you will probably need to have 3 lessons at my school instead of 4 lessons in the club's puppy training course. Naturally it is much easier for you and your dog to concentrate on learning when you have individual lessons to begin with as it helps you to learn the basic lessons.
How to make an appointment:
Please phone Katarina Behan on (03) 9439 8546- or leave a message on her machine.
How to get to training:
Melway Ref 32 D3. The clubroom is situated below the Banyule Tennis Club on Plymoth Street, Heidelberg on the carpark level. There is a notice on the door saying "The Kintala Club".
Please dress warmly if you are coming on a winter evening.
What to bring:
- At least 300gm small pieces of meat - about the size of your finger nail. We prefer you to bring raw gravy beef or sturfry strips which your dog can swallow quickly and which does not crumble and drop on the ground. If you feel your dog cannot eat beef, please discuss this when you make your appointment.
- A lead. Your dog can wear either a fixed collar or a body harness.
- Please bring your dog keen to take the food rewards we are going to offer him/her.
- Please wear flat shoes and preferably slacks or shorts. Thongs can distract some dogs and skirts can interfere with your dog's vision.
I look forward to hearing from you....
Ruth Weston
