Pet Facilitated Therapy
The Kintala Club volunteered to start a Pet Facilitated Therapy program at a local hospital back in 1987.
Dogs and their handlers visit aged care facilities where they work with staff members to facilitate conversation and physical activity.
Older people are often deprived of touch in our society, so patting and fondling dogs is particularly beneficial especially reaching those with a dementing illness.
People suffering speech problems after a stroke may try to speak to a dog which then encourages them to communicate with others around them.
Dogs must have passed an Ideal Dogs of Australia course and be temperamentally suitable for this type of "work."
